WASHINGTON—On Tuesday, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced nearly $1.5 billion in awards for the Low- or No-Emission Program and the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program. These funds will help transit authorities replace aging buses and infrastructure with zero-emission buses and support American manufacturing. The Electrification Coalition (EC) worked with various transit authority partners to prepare for grant applications, such as through the Local Infrastructure Hub. Collectively, the EC has supported over $170 million in the successful award of FTA Low-No Emission Program funding, accelerating the electrification of transit buses across the country.

Electrification Coalition Director of Technical Services Matt Stephens-Rich released the following statement:

“The Federal Transit Administration grants represent an excellent opportunity to support American manufacturing and good-paying jobs while reducing our nation’s dependence on oil for transportation.

“These grants prioritize American-built buses, which is critical at a time when we risk losing ground to China in the global transition to electric vehicles. The grants for zero-emission projects also include funds for workforce development and training, amplifying the economic benefits of transportation electrification.

“Electric vehicles, particularly electric transit buses, support our national and economic security by disentangling our transportation systems from global oil markets controlled by bad actors that do not share our democratic values. Instead, we are investing those dollars in domestic electricity.

“These grants will make the U.S. stronger and safer through job creation, reduced oil dependency, and improved public health. We applaud the Federal Transit Administration for getting more electric transit buses rolling in American communities.”
